An International Roll of Honour plaque bearing the names of all past and current Cardiff University medicine and dentistry students to gain a place in the national or international rugby team has been officially unveiled. The plaque takes pride of place in the IV Lounge. The unveiling ceremony was attended by the current Cardiff Medical RFC team, as well as the Dean of Medicine, Professor Paul Morgan.

Former medical student and Welsh international Jamie Roberts officially unveiled the plaque with graduate and ex-Scarlets player James Bater. Both sporting stars were also honoured at the ceremony by the addition of their names to the plaque. The Roll of Honour plaque bears the names of some of Wales’ greatest rugby legends including 1950s British Lion player, Jack Matthews, and former Welsh captain, Gwyn Jones.

Jamie Roberts was named the British Lions’ Man of The Series during 2009 summer tour of South Africa, and has just been selected for the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia. James Bater is a Cardiff Medical graduate who retired from the Scarlets in 2008 in order to become a full-time dentist. Jamie said: “It’s a great honour to be up there with some of the big names of the sport and hopefully we’ll see a few of the current team up there in the near future”.

Professor Paul Morgan, who attended the unveiling, said “The medic rugby team has been one of the top medic rugby teams in the country for many years and has had a very successful past. The plaque is there to preserve the identity of the team as long as we possibly can.”

Huw Davies, Coach of Cardiff Medicals RFC commented “It is obviously an outstanding achievement to play rugby for Wales, to reach that level as well as having the dedication and ability to study medicine\dentistry takes a very special individual, James and Jamie have joined that extremely select group. We are very proud to have them as members of our club. I would also like to thank them both for always finding the time to support the current team.”
